Your homepage is the front door of your business online. Good website homepage design makes people want to step inside, look around and take the next step. Poor design sends them straight back to Google.
Most visitors decide within seconds whether to stay. In that time they want to know three things: what you do, whether it’s for them and what to do next. Everything on your homepage should help answer those questions.
9 website homepage design tips
1. Lead with a clear headline and subheadline
Your headline is the most important line on your website. Say what you do and who you help in plain words. Then use the subheadline to name the problem you solve or the result people get.
“Operations support for busy founders” followed by “Get your time back with systems that run without you” tells a visitor more in five seconds than any clever slogan.
2. Put one main call to action above the fold
Decide the single most important action you want visitors to take, like booking a call, and put that button right under your headline. Use clear words such as “Book a strategy call” rather than “Submit” or “Learn more.”
You can repeat it further down the page, but keep it the same action. Too many choices means no choice gets made.
3. Keep your navigation simple
Your logo sits in the top left and links back home. Your menu sits along the top with five to seven items at most: Home, About, Services, Blog and Contact usually cover it. If visitors have to hunt for something, they’ll leave instead.
4. Use a clean layout with plenty of white space
A crowded homepage feels stressful. Give each section room to breathe, keep one idea per section and guide the eye from top to bottom: headline, what you offer, proof, call to action. That visual hierarchy does a lot of the selling for you.
5. Show what you offer at a glance
A short services snapshot, three or four boxes with a line each, helps visitors see quickly whether you can help them. Link each one to the full service details so people who are interested can go deeper.
6. Add social proof near your call to action
Testimonials, client results and logos of businesses you’ve worked with reassure visitors that real people trust you. Place them close to your buttons, where people are deciding whether to take the next step. Specific results with a name and photo always beat a vague “So great to work with!”
7. Use real photos where you can
Stock photos are easy to spot and easy to forget. A professional photo of you, your workspace or your team builds connection faster than anything else on the page. Keep images high quality but compressed so they don’t slow your site down.
8. Choose readable fonts and a simple colour palette
Stick to two fonts at most, one for headings and one for body text, in a size that’s easy to read on a phone. Use two or three brand colours consistently, and save your boldest colour for buttons so your calls to action stand out.
9. Design for mobile first
Many of your visitors will see your homepage on a phone before anything else. Check that your headline fits, your buttons are easy to tap and nothing needs pinching or zooming. A homepage that works beautifully on desktop but breaks on mobile is losing you enquiries every day.

Your homepage is never really finished
As your business grows, your offers, results and audience change, and your homepage should change with them. Review it every few months, refresh your testimonials and keep your headline matched to what you sell now. Regular website maintenance keeps the rest of your site in step too.
At Tech & Client, we design and refine homepages and websites that look good and do their job: bringing the right people in and moving them towards working with you.
